In the MAGA loyalty hierarchy, there are greater quislings and lesser ones. The lesser kind votes the right way, stays mostly quiet, and tries to avoid the wrong headline. They are useful.
They are not safe.
John Cornyn found that out yesterday.
The Lesser Quisling
Cornyn has appeared in these pages before. For years he built genuine credentials as a fiscal hawk - warning about the national debt with more substance than most of his colleagues. Then the One Big Beautiful Bill arrived, projected to add roughly $3 trillion to that debt. He voted yes. The conviction held as long as it was costless. That is the lesser quisling’s mode: principled in rhetoric, compliant in practice.
But that wasn’t what cost him this race.
But the deeper offense was simpler. In 2023, Cornyn told reporters that “Trump’s time has passed him by.” He quickly reversed course when Trump won the nomination. He voted the right way. He stayed in line.
It wasn’t enough. Many question Trump’s cognitive acuity, but his memory for slights is acute. The sentence Cornyn spoke in 2023 never left the ledger.
The Greater Quisling
Ken Paxton arrived at this race with a remarkable credential set: impeached by the Texas House in 2023 on charges including bribery and abuse of office, acquitted by the Texas Senate, and the subject of a federal investigation that the outgoing Biden Justice Department declined to prosecute. This is a man who campaigns on traditional values - and whose own staff cited an extramarital affair in their FBI referral, not as gossip, but as the thread connecting him to the corruption allegations. By conventional political logic, he should have been finished.
Instead, he ran as the unambiguous alternative to Cornyn’s half-measures. As Attorney General, he spent years aggressively defending Trump-aligned redistricting maps in court - fighting all the way to the Supreme Court to protect them. He was not merely a supporter.
He was an instrument.
Trump endorsed him on May 19th. A week later, it wasn’t close.
The Numbers
In the initial Republican primary on March 3rd, Cornyn actually led - narrowly. Out of 2.14 million Republican primary voters, no one crossed the 50% threshold required to win outright:
Cornyn: ~41.9%
Paxton: ~40.7%
Hunt (third candidate): ~13.5%
Then Trump endorsed Paxton. In the May 26th runoff, with approximately 1.4 million votes cast:
Ken Paxton: 885,949 votes (≈ 63.8%)
John Cornyn: 501,725 votes (≈ 36.2%)
A note on the electorate: voters eligible for the runoff were limited to those who had voted in the March Republican primary - or had sat out March entirely. Texas does not require party registration, but the runoff was not a fully open field.
For scale: in a typical Texas November midterm, about 8-9 million Texans vote out of roughly 17.4 million registered voters. The 1.4 million who showed up for the Republican runoff represent less than 10% of the registered electorate.
Less than one in ten registered Texans determined who will represent the dominant party in the state’s Senate race this fall.
The Verdict
Cornyn was the Senate Majority Whip. A four-term senator. One of the most powerful Republicans in Washington. He raised money, delivered votes, and mostly stayed in line.
He once said the wrong thing. That was enough.
In today’s Republican Party, half-loyalty is no loyalty at all. The greater quisling wins - not despite his scandals, but because of what they prove: that no institution, no norm, and no accusation matters more than total submission.
November is coming. James Talarico, the Democratic nominee, faces the long math of Texas. But the real story is already written: a four-term senator just lost his seat for a 6-word sentence he uttered three years ago.
The loyalty test has no partial credit.

Trump + Paxton = trash supporting trash. Talarico is going to give Republicans the first real run for their (endless) money since Beto. This will be good.
Amazing what trump will do to someone who disses him.
