Scott Bessent has become one of the most obsequious quislings in the administration. He’s making this coin happen - despite the stall on Bessent’s planned Trump $250 bill that we covered in Praise for the American Ayatollah.
A statement about who appears on currency and coinage, from the history page of the US Mint website:
“The face of Lady Liberty appeared on our circulating coins for more than 150 years. When considering options for our first coins, Congress debated over whether to feature George Washington and later presidents. Many believed that putting the current president on a coin was too similar to Great Britain’s practice of featuring their monarchs. Instead, Congress chose to personify the concept of liberty rather than a real person.”
31 U.S. Code § 5114 - Engraving and printing currency and security documents
(b) … Only the portrait of a deceased individual may appear on United States currency and securities.
Scott Bessent, July 15, 2026, “X” post:
“As America commemorates 250 years of independence, the @usmint will begin striking this new $1 gold coin to honor the enduring legacy of liberty and a lasting symbol of patriotism. Featuring President Trump, it celebrates the strength of American values, and the promise of a nation dedicated to preserving freedom for all.”
For what it’s worth, it’s not a real gold coin - it’s “manganese brass” that just looks like gold. A suitable parallel there to the face on the coin.
These Individuals Have Each Earned an Honorable Mention Award from Quislings@Substack:
The coin design was recommended by the Commission of Fine Arts, all of whose members were appointed - of course - by Trump: Rodney Mims Cook Jr., James C. McCrery II, Mary Anne Carter, Chamberlain R. Harris, Roger Kimball, Pamela Hughes Patenaude, and Matthew Taylor.

No! This cannot happen!!! So crazy!
