Below is a gift link, which should get you past the paywall, to The Atlantic’s interview with the historian Timothy Ryback about his new book, 53 Days: How Hitler Dismantled a Democracy.
If you’ve read much history of the Third Reich, the interview may be all you need. Having made it through The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich twice, and having spent years now on quislings then and now, we may skip the book ourselves.
It is a short, effective account of how Hitler was enabled, and of the moments when he could have been stopped. Ryback closes with a comparison to Hungary, where voters removed Orbán last April.
We think it’s probably worth ten minutes of your time.

Drat. The gift link expired before I got to read it.
