EDITOR’S NOTE: This is a work of satire and parody, published for commentary and entertainment. It did not happen. Karoline Leavitt did not sit for this interview and has not endorsed, reviewed, or seen it. Wherever this piece quotes her, the President, or officials for real - marked clearly below with a linked source - those quotes are accurate and sourced to public reporting. Every other line of dialogue attributed to “Imaginary Karoline” in the interview section is invented and should not be mistaken for anything she actually said.
Our sister website, quislings.info, profiled Karoline Leavitt early in her tenure, writing that she “parrots the Project 2025 agenda, dismissing inconvenient facts or criticisms with practiced ease” and might be “better at ‘alternative facts’ than Kellyanne Conway.”
Eighteen months, one record-setting tenure, and scores of fact-checks later - from PolitiFact and Snopes alone, let alone everyone else keeping count - Leavitt announced this month she’s stepping down as White House Press Secretary at the end of August - the youngest person ever to hold the job, and by several accounts one of the hardest for Donald Trump to replace.
There’s more to her than the podium persona, though. She wears a cross around her neck. She has told interviewers her faith is “incredibly important” to her, “now more than ever.” And in a video that circulated widely this year, cameras caught her gathering her staff in a circle before a briefing to pray: “Lord Jesus, please give us the strength, the knowledge, the ability to articulate our words and have fun and be confident. In Jesus’ name. Amen.”
So we had an idea: what if the New York Times sat her down for the exit interview no White House press shop would ever actually allow? We couldn’t get a real one. Here’s ours.
The Exit Interview
[The following did not happen. See Editor’s Note above.]
NEW YORK TIMES: You prayed with your staff before almost every briefing. Fair to ask - what were you praying for, exactly?
In real life, she’s described it this way: “It gives me the confidence and the ability to articulate my words, knowledge, prayer, protection” - a moment to “reset” before facing reporters. [OANN, 2025]
Imaginary Karoline: Strength, mostly. And a little bit of short-term memory loss, if He’s willing to grant it.
NYT: Let’s talk scripture, then. The Ninth Commandment: “Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor.” You’ve built a career on the podium. How do those coexist?
Imaginary Karoline: I think people misread that one. It says ‘against thy neighbor’ - and everything I’ve ever said has been for my neighbor, President Trump. I’m not bearing false witness against him. I’m bearing witness for him. There’s a difference, and I think a real theologian would back me up on that.
NYT: Okay - the Big Beautiful Bill. You told this room it wouldn’t add a dime to the deficit and would save $1.6 trillion. Independent scorekeepers put the real number at $3 to $4 trillion added. What happened? [Rated False - PolitiFact]
Imaginary Karoline: That number came from the Council of Economic Advisors. I trust the Council. The Council trusts the President. I don’t see the problem - it’s a very trustworthy chain of custody.
NYT: You called tariffs ‘a tax cut for the American people,’ while households were paying over a thousand dollars more a year because of them. [Rated False - PolitiFact]
Imaginary Karoline: Paying more for America is the most patriotic tax cut there is. I stand by the phrase, if not the receipts.
NYT: At your very first briefing, you told this room DOGE and OMB ‘found that there was about to be $50 million taxpayer dollars that went out the door to fund condoms in Gaza.’ That had no basis in fact. [Rated False - PolitiFact]
Imaginary Karoline: I was handed a number. I said the number. That’s most of the job description, if we’re being honest, which - obviously - I always am.
NYT: You literally said, on camera, that your office ‘reconfigured’ the D.C. crime numbers. That’s not a spin line, that’s a confession. [Raw Story]
Imaginary Karoline: ‘Reconfigured’ is such a harsh word for ‘looked at them until they agreed with us.’
NYT: Let’s do a quick lightning round through the rest of the record - real quotes, one line each.
Imaginary Karoline: Thrilling. Go.
NYT: Eggs: you blamed Biden for “the mass killing of more than 100 million chickens” - the same routine USDA bird-flu policy your own administration kept using once egg prices became Trump’s problem. [Rated Half True - PolitiFact]
Imaginary Karoline: A chicken has never once filed a fact-check.
NYT: The Epstein files: “a hoax... perpetuated by opportunistic Democrats.” [PBS NewsHour]
Imaginary Karoline: I stand by ‘hoax.’ I’m still workshopping the sequel.
NYT: You denied the President mixed up Greenland and Iceland at Davos. He had. [Snopes]
Imaginary Karoline: Honestly, Greenland is mostly ice and Iceland is mostly green - whoever named them set us all up for this.
NYT: The AI video of the Obamas as apes - you called the backlash ‘fake outrage.’ The White House disagreed with you days later. [Newsweek]
Imaginary Karoline: I was early. Everyone else just needed time to come around.
NYT: You dismissed years of scrutiny over ‘very fine people’ as the ‘Charlottesville hoax.’ [Daily Kos]
Imaginary Karoline: History is just journalism that hasn’t been corrected yet.
NYT: On Iran, you said congressional authorization ‘is not necessary because we’re currently in major combat operations.’ [Grabien transcript]
Imaginary Karoline: We briefed the Gang of Eight. Eight is basically the whole Congress, alphabetically.
NYT: You once suggested you might be better at ‘alternative facts’ than Kellyanne Conway. Looking back at this list, do you think you won that competition?
Imaginary Karoline: I don’t like to brag, but I was 27 and doing this from a podium in front of live cameras every single day. Kellyanne had Sunday shows. I had a full-time content calendar. Respectfully, it’s not even close.
NYT: You’re the youngest press secretary in history. What’s next - book, cable news, 2028?
Imaginary Karoline: I’ve learned never to rule anything out in this administration. I’ve also learned never to confirm anything until forty-five minutes after everyone already knows.
NYT: Last one. The President has, on multiple occasions and in public, commented on your lips - comparing them to ‘a machine gun,’ telling a crowd it’s ‘that face, it’s that brain, it’s those lips, the way they move.’ Why do you think he keeps bringing that up?
Real quotes, for the record: Newsmax, August 2025 - “It’s those lips, the way they move. They move like she’s a machine gun.” Aboard Air Force One, October 14, 2025, after asking reporters “Should Karoline be replaced?” - “They move like a machine gun, right?” (AOL / Yahoo News)
Imaginary Karoline: I choose to hear it as a compliment on my words-per-minute. Honestly, at this point, it’s the most consistent talking point in the building.
