For years, Budapest was the North Star for a specific brand of American politician. It was the “laboratory of the future,” a place where liberal democracy was being dismantled in favor of a “God, Family, and Country” rhetoric that conveniently masked systemic corruption and a submissive relationship with the Kremlin.
But the laboratory has exploded. The “Mouse” has fallen. And in the debris, we find the reputations of the American “Quislings” who bet their political souls on a Hungarian autocrat.
The Parable of the Lion and the Mouse
There is an old Aesop’s fable where a lion spares a mouse, and the mouse later saves the lion from a hunter’s net. In the halls of the Kremlin, Viktor Orbán reportedly offered a darker, more modern version. He allegedly positioned himself as the “Mouse” to Putin’s “Lion” - offering to gnaw through the nets of EU sanctions and NATO unity in exchange for being the last thing the Lion ate.
Orbán believed his “illiberalism” was the vanguard of a new world order. He wasn’t just a leader; he was a broker, selling the idea that a small nation could thrive by becoming a client state to a dictator. He bet that the Lion would win in Ukraine, that the West would fracture, and that he would be the king of the ruins.
He was wrong. The Lion stayed trapped in the thicket of a disastrous war, and the Mouse was eventually cornered by his own people.
The American Tourists
What is truly damning is not that a Hungarian leader turned to autocracy - that is a Hungarian tragedy. The scandal is the American “Quisling” class who flocked to him, treating Budapest not as a diplomatic stop, but as a shrine.
We saw it in the constant pilgrimages and the unprecedented spectacle of Vice President JD Vance essentially campaigning for a foreign autocrat on the ground. Secretary of State Marco Rubio visited Budapest and said “President Trump is deeply committed to your success because your success is our success.” In the Senate, Mike Lee has been a vocal Orbán supporter, while in the House, Paul Gosar, Keith Self and Andy Harris attended CPAC Hungary supporting the Orbán regime.
As Paul Krugman noted, the economic ties between the U.S. and Hungary are negligible - less than 4% of Hungary’s exports go to America. This wasn’t about trade; it was about a shared desire to import Orbán’s playbook: the erosion of the rule of law, the demonization of “internal enemies,” and a subservience to Russian interests over democratic alliances.
The Conservative Alternative
The ultimate irony of Orbán’s defeat is the man who delivered it: Péter Magyar.
Magyar didn’t run on a platform of radical progressivism. He is a conservative. He is a man who understands tradition and national identity. But he is a conservative who believes in a sovereign Hungary that isn’t a doormat for Moscow.
Magyar’s victory proves the great lie of the American Quisling: that you must sacrifice democracy to save “Western Civilization.” He proved that you can be a patriot without being a puppet.
The Lesson for the “Lion-Seekers”
What does this portend for the Americans who support Russia over Ukraine? Those who see Putin as a “strong” leader and Zelenskyy as a “beggar”?
It should be a wake-up call.
The “Strongman” model is a house of cards. When you base a movement on the personality of a single leader and the patronage of a foreign dictator, you aren’t building a legacy; you’re building a cult of failure.
The fall of Orbán is a reminder that America has a moral role in Europe - not as a bystander, and certainly not as a fan-club for autocracy. Being “America First” should mean standing for the principles that made America a superpower: liberty, self-determination, and the courage to stand against lions, rather than trying to be the mouse that helps them.
The American Quislings hitched their wagon to a falling star. Now, they are left standing in the dark, explaining why they chose the side of the Mouse in a world that still values the truth.

Great hope for the US to get rid of the strongman
Insightful. Hard to be patient but the tide is turning.
